Make Your Own Tye-Dye T-Shirts For Kids

!±8± Make Your Own Tye-Dye T-Shirts For Kids

For readers with children, learning how to make your own tye-dye t-shirts can be a fun way to bring the whole family together. All you need are some inexpensive white t-shirts, a few basic supplies, and a desire to express yourself through color. Before you know it, you and your kids will look like you're on the way to a Janis Joplin concert back in 1968.

Tie-Dye Supplies

Before you learn how to make your own tye-dye t-shirts, here are the supplies you'll need:

T-shirt (you can also use sheets, socks, or anything else that's at least 60 percent cotton) Rubber bands Dye Spray bottle (used to apply certain types of dye) Rubber gloves Old bucket to mix dye in Salt (adding salt to dye helps it set and makes for more colorful designs) Plastic bags Duct tape Soda ash (some dyes require that you treat clothing with soda ash before the dyeing process) Garbage bags Towels

How to Tie-Dye a Shirt

Step #1 - Begin by washing and drying the shirt to be tie-dyed.

Step #2 - At this stage, you should decide what sort of tye-dye pattern you'll be trying to achieve. Common patterns include circles, spirals, and stripes.

Step #3 - Set up a workplace outside if possible, as the dye being used will permanently stain any fabric (or carpet) it comes into contact with. Use duct tape and garbage bags to protect the surface you'll be working on.

Step #4 - Mix the dye in your bucket according to the instructions on the box. Add soda ash if required. Add 1 cup of salt to help the colors set, and be sure to wear your rubber gloves.

Step #5 - Place the shirt to be dyed flat onto the work surface.

Step #6 - Place your hand on the center of the t-shirt and lift it into the air. Run your hand down the short and gather it together.

Step #7 - Right above where you lifted the shirt, place the first rubber band. Then, every inch or two, place another rubber band and wrap it firmly around the shirt. When you've finished, the length of the shirt should be wrapped in rubber bands.

Step #8 - Place the shirt into the dye and leave as per the directions on the box. If you are going to dye the fabric more than one color, it's best to start with the lightest color.

Step #9 - After dyeing each color, remove the shirt and rinse it off with warm and then cool water (if it says so on the dye box). Depending on the desired pattern, you may need to remove the rubber bands after the first dyeing. Always consult the box, as some dyes require you to wait 24 hours before rinsing (keeping the shirt inside a garbage bag in the meantime).

Step #10 - After you've tye-dyed your shirt, make sure that you wash it individually in cool water for the first few times. In case any dye bleeds, this will ensure that other clothes aren't stained.

Now that you know how to make your own tye-dye t-shirts, you and your kids can have a great time in the backyard creating colorful clothing for leisure activities. Don't be afraid to experiment, as you're likely to find a number of interesting techniques for tie-dying fabrics.

Fairy Costumes

!±8± Fairy Costumes

Things have never ending cycle. For kids, this can be influenced by the movies or television shows that they see, and also by what their peers are taking interesting of. For a while, my daughter loved the Wiggles, but she seems to be outgrowing them and into more of the things that her peers are talking about. One of the new trends that I have observed is that many girls are into fairies. This was brought to my attention when my daughter asked for fairy costumes for play. I looked them up, and found out that they are very numerous these days.

Fairy Costumes: you don't have to have the reason to wear them

Fairy costumes was always around, but a lot started appearing when a movie or television show starts to feature them. There is a new Barbie movie about fairies, and that might be one of the reasons why there are many buying fairy costumes right now. Though some are based on the movies that comes out, there are many other ones more generic in nature that are also available. For some kids, they don't care which fairy costume they get, as long as they have one that's enough.

The best thing about fairy costumes, at least in my daughter's eyes, is that you don't have to have a reason to wear them. We have gone to the grocery store with her dressed in many different things, and I won't be surprised if sooner we'll go with her wearing her fairy costume. She loves the attention, and her imagination allows her to believe that she really is a fairy, although you don't often see them in the grocery stores. She wouldn't mind if she had to make her own fairy costume, as long as she has wings, she is ready to go.

Fairy Costume-make something special

You need not buy complete fairy costumes. You can always buy the parts and pieces if you want to create something special. You can see what the basics are just by looking at other sets of fairy costumes, and then get what you want to make your own. You must have fairy wings, and some type of frilly or flowing dress, and the rest is up to you. Your kids may even demand for some very specific things they are looking for when asking for fairy costumes, so it is much better to search the parts together. You might be surprised that you can buy just a few things to modify something that you already have in your closets for a really great fairy costume.

Barbie Beach Party Planning, Ideas, Fun History Facts

!±8± Barbie Beach Party Planning, Ideas, Fun History Facts

Since the time she was released by Mattel in the late 1950s, Barbie has been a favorite among little girls. That's why a Barbie Beach Party is a perfect idea for any young girl. Guests are invited to bring their favorite Barbie and come to a Barbie Beach (or pool) Party. Beach party decorations can be a lot of fun. Using lots of pinks, purples, and other pastel colored balloons, a good sized wading pool where both guests and their Barbie dolls can splash around, and of course beach towels to lounge around on is the perfect solution to decorating. Beach balls that can be kicked around add to the fun. Of course, besides a sunny day, the most important component of a Barbie Beach Party will be having plenty of sun screen on hand to keep young guests from getting sunburned.

After a dip in the pool, guests may enjoy doing something super easy yet crafty like making their own body glitter, stringing together a beaded necklace, or creating a jeweled picture frame or hair barrette. Another fun game would include having a Barbie Dress Up Relay. Each guest will then take the bag of adult -sized clothes (in the form of costumes Barbie has been famous for wearing), and as it becomes their turn, the guest will grab the bag, put the clothes on over their own, run around the relay course, come back, take the clothes off and stuff them back into the bag (a shopping bag would be perfect because we know Barbie must LOVE to shop!) and hand it to the next team mate in line. The first team to have each guest complete the relay wins.

Finish the party with a nice luncheon of finger sandwiches and sherbet floats and this will be a Barbie party that everyone will enjoy.
